Permissions Explained
GitSniper requests minimal permissions:
| Permission | Why It's Needed |
|---|---|
github.com |
Read PR comments and diff content |
gitlab.com |
Read MR comments and diff content |
clipboardWrite |
Copy extracted comments to clipboard |
storage |
Save your preferences (preambles, excluded authors) |
GitSniper does not:
- Track your browsing activity
- Send data to external servers (beyond GitHub/GitLab APIs)
- Access repositories you haven't opened
- Modify any code or comments
Self-Hosted GitLab
For self-hosted GitLab instances, GitSniper works automatically. The extension detects GitLab's interface patterns regardless of the domain.
If your instance uses a significantly customised theme, some features may require adjustment. Open an issue if you encounter problems.
Verifying Installation
After installation:
- Navigate to any PR on GitHub or MR on GitLab
- Look for the GitSniper button in the page (usually near the comment actions)
- Click it to extract comments
If the button doesn't appear, try refreshing the page. The extension injects after the page fully loads.
Updating
Both Firefox and Chrome update extensions automatically. You'll always have the latest version without manual intervention.
To check your current version:
- Firefox: Menu > Add-ons > GitSniper > Details
- Chrome: Menu > Extensions > GitSniper > Details
Uninstalling
To remove GitSniper:
- Firefox: Menu > Add-ons > GitSniper > Remove
- Chrome: Right-click the extension icon > Remove from Chrome
Your preferences (preambles, excluded authors) are stored locally and will be deleted when you uninstall.
